Songs and Poems of Robert Burns Scots Gaelic Edition Robert Burns 9781117663524 Books

I bought this book to help me with an essay I was writing in Gaelic on the works of Burns. Charles Macphater has achieved something commendable in seeking to translate these poems while paying respect to rhyme and metre. Since he did his translations over 100 years ago, some of his spelling is a bit old fashioned now or would not be in accordance with GOC, but his affection for Burns is clear through completion of such an enormous task. I could not find certain major works as "Address to the unco guid", "Holy Willie's prayer" or "Ae fond kiss", but the popular "To a mouse", "Auld lang syne" and "For a that" are all there and sympathetically translated. This work does not claim to be a translation of all Burns' poems and I suppose I should really have translated any missing poems myself.
At the time when it was first published, this work would have made Burns accessible to those Gaels who did not understand Scots and so I have to praise Macphater for such an undertaking.
