Left behind by his childhood friend, Aiben ekes out his existence as a cybermancer acolyte and part-time starship mechanic on a backwater world. He leads an uncertain life, until one day, the Zenzani Protectorate invades his home and destroys everything he has ever known. Aiben soon learns that the molecule-sized machines, which augment his body and mind, have a centuries-old plan for him involving nanotechnology, genetic manipulation, and hyperspatial thought. Now, along with his companions, an old soldier and a sentient mechanoid, he takes his journey to a world of fabricated prophecies. There he navigates the treacheries of war and espionage to find an ancient weapon and a long-forgotten people that will bring his past crashing into his future and seal his destiny forever.

I really liked the setting of this story. The world he has created is very interesting to me and kept me interested just to see what would happen. That being said I have a very hard time identifying with his main character. The guy does things sometimes that I just find impossible to believe. And he was never developed enough that I could accept him as a separate person. This is one of the books I have read that I really wish the story was being told by someone who was a bit better at. That being said I will probably buy a sequel.
P.S. For some reason the feel of the book kept reminding me of Dune.

Nanomech eBook R David King Reviews
David King created a wonderful new universe where so many salient points get exposed in a fascinating way. Nanotech in many forms and its meeting with human consciousness is fascinating. How are we going to develop as a species and how can we remain human with all this new tech?
I would love to read more of how life enfolds in this universe now that the scene is set.
When is a new story coming?
I kept picturing Dune when I read this book although that is not necessarily a bad thing. It was a page turner for me but a bit of a mental exercise to wrap my head around the language and terminology created by the author. I guess that is called intelligent scifi, probably not my favorite genre after all as I felt I had to work a bit too much to read the story. It is probably better read in a few long sittings rather than in fits and starts as I had to read it. It isnt a story that handles interruptions well, in my opinion of course.
I felt somewhat disappointed when one that I thought was a great character was killed off rather abruptly. It seemed unnecessary to do in that particular one but then I have a tendency to want to see all my favorites rewarded in the end, unrealistic I know. Another reviewer mentioned that the main character wasnt attention grabbing enough and didnt make the reader identify with him. I realized that I had a similar opinion after thinking about the book later. The main character just didnt seem wonderful enough.
However, having said all that, I did like the book. The thought put into this complex book must have been not inconsiderable and it is (mostly) well written. I found no dull moments and certainly wasn't tempted to quit reading it as some of the reviewers say. I don't regret the money spent on it and if I were a huge fan of the genre, I would likely seek out more by this author.
'Nanomech' and I did not get along. At all!
And while I don't like to give just one star to any author, 'Nanomech' was so irritating that eventually I downed tools and gave up reading it.
Specifically, the writing style seemed to have an imperative to wring every last possible adjective from the thesaurus into each and every sentence. It reminded me of high school story writing, with the author apparently unaccustomed to subtly and seemingly unwilling to pare down the word count to emote rather than describe. The consequence was overwrought cliché upon overwrought cliché as the paragraphs competed with each other to be the most impactful in that chapter. R. David King admits to a degree in Linguistics and love of languages and the turn of phrase, but that just raised my expectations with regards the prose and story arc, and I was left unfulfilled on that front.
Then there are the characters, who I found insipid and uninteresting...not to mention verbose! Aiben, the protagonist, is reflective to the point of paralysis and not afraid to articulate that to anyone who will listen. In gritty detail. Even other characters have to shut him up, and I was not far behind them myself as he sprouted his dismay at life and his lot. If he just grumbled that would be OK (if annoying) but his callowness means his responses are limited - with anger and panic being the most well handled tools in his psyche.
His mentor/teacher/father-figure, Oand-ib, mapped directly to Obi-Wan Kenobi in my mind, having that same Zen-like calmness no matter the situation, and despite knowing that his personal would trigger significant personal pain and suffering.
Finally, the plot. It seems a classic 'young, unwitting/unwilling hero in the making' story arc, with the 'evil to overcome' being a megalomaniac dictator who uses ancient Black Arts to spread his brand of subjugation across the known Universe. Aiben's childhood friend is mixed up in this of course and layers are added to provide some neat twists, but even that did not overcome my sheer lack of interest in the characters.
Now, just because I didn't like 'Nanomech' does not mean others won't. But I would recommend that you 'Try a Sample' on your and check whether the writing style resonates before you buy it.
I gave up at 10% because it was boring and repetitive. There might be a story in there but I didn't see it.
If the story had been written as well as the book description it would have been five stars. Like others, I found many of the names to be stumbling blocks in the text. In the "grander scheme" the author may have felt them to be relevant but in my opinion it didn't really add to the story. The characters weren't the "deepest" but they were developed enough to be believable. The story line was cohesive and I was eager to follow along. It was not a two in the morning page turner but it was worth reading.
This book reminded me so much of Star Wars, in a different setting with different characters and a slightly different story (semi-sentient nanomechs instead of midi-chlorians, brain energy instead of the force). If you enjoy Star Wars, you'll definitely enjoy this book.. the author did a good job, and it was an easy read which keeps you coming back for more. I definitely enjoyed the book, and am hoping that there will be follow up books to further refine the story and setting. As for this story.. the book was a little shallow, and the author left a lot of unanswered questions about "how things work" - it would be nice to know more about the races, how the nanomechs work, what are all of the things that can be done with them.. overall it was a good read, and I'm looking forward to more books by this author!
